In this book I give you many plans, because only with the details can I support what I say about preliminary studies. But they also show the wonderful variety of sizes, shapes and characteristics of the flowers, which are available to the painter. If we understand their structure well, then we are free to attempt a more personal approach.
Because there is a tendency to neglect the art of flower decoration, I have included a few examples by which I hope to make you pay careful of certain basic rules regarding design, outline, balance and colour harmony, because none of them should be ignored if you want your painting to be accepted by both the specialist botanist and the experienced connoisseur of flower painting. Because just as the portraitist makes sure to put his model on the right background, so do the flowers - models need to be placed as well as possible.
Today, the painting of flowers covers a huge radius, which can include "the rich manipulations of illusory detail", which characterizes the Dutch painters, as well as the subtle and lyrical impressionism of the French School, which is why the paintings that have the theme of flowers are calculated much more than half a century ago.
