Book painting Portable Images and Paintings

This study is addressed to students or professional hagiographers & visual artists, who must know the properties of new materials and their resistance to environmental factors, to art conservators, to curators or managers of collections and finally, to the owners of paintings who want to know the ways of preserving their works. An effort was made on the one hand to present the construction of portable icons and paintings as other studies have already done in the past, and on the other hand to present the construction materials and the factors of wear and ageing from the point of view of the art conservator, which will help, we believe, the visual and hagiographers and will be an innovative approach. It is structured in twelve (12) chapters covering the presentation of all construction materials and techniques, formed for greater ease in three main parts. In the first part, all the construction materials of the portable image (wood, fabric, preparation, pigments, binders, gilding and varnishing) are analyzed and at the end the construction of a portable image is presented step by step. The second part presents the materials and the construction of a painting on fabric as well as the ways of carnage. Finally, the third and final part is devoted to the preservation of paintings through 'prevention' by presenting the basic fields of preventive maintenance.
